Summary
Processes and reviews client credit applications. Makes recommendations in accordance with sound credit-granting principles and compliance with Company, Sponsor Bank and Legal, Policy and Procedures. Effectively interacts with merchants, sales representatives, Senior Underwriters and Management to achieve timely adjudication of applications and in limiting loss, assessing risk, and in protecting the company against fraud and other risks.
Purpose
The Underwriter will provide timely and unparalleled excellence in processing and evaluating merchant applications; while maintaining optimum safety and profitability of the portfolio
Essential Responsibilities
- Primarily focus in low to medium risk merchant applications
- Make credit decision on new merchant accounts up to $50,000 in risk exposure based on credit policy and credit worthiness of the business and/or the owners/principals
- Evaluate and make recommendations to Senior Underwriter, Lead Underwriter, Underwriting Manager and Senior Management on accounts beyond individual approval authority level.
- Perform preliminary financial statement and industry comparative analysis on potential multi-million-dollar merchants as well as high risk merchant as required by credit policy and Senior Underwriter / Lead Underwriter or Underwriting Manager.
- Ensure that department productivity goals and objectives are met on a daily basis.
- Minimize liability risk to Company through sound credit decisions
- Complete all departmental special assignments in a timely manner
- Refer existing high-risk merchants to Credit Review with recommended actions.
- Provide high level of customer service to prospective merchants, sales reps and internal Company employees.
- Complete financial statements reviews/analysis and risk assessment on existing merchants as assigned by management.
- Handle priority items and special projects as assigned by Senior Underwriter / Lead Underwriter or Underwriting Manager.
- Other duties that may be assigned from time to time to ensure the smooth operation of the Department including special assignments.
Required Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal/customer relation skills
- Strong financial analysis skills. Must be able to interpret Business Financial Statements.
- Bachelor's degree in business recommended with finance or accounting emphasis preferred or completion of a qualified Certification Program.
- English – Ability to communicate clearly in English (Writing/Speaking)
- Ability to follow all company policies and procedures; as well as internal departmental procedures
- Ability to work in team driven environment while working independently to complete daily tasks
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong knowledge of Credit Analysis procedures and techniques
- Ability to complete assigned tasks, within deadlines and with little supervision
- Ability to work rapidly, independently and accurately under pressure to meet departmental goals.
- Proficiency with computer programs used for daily work is required
- Advanced knowledge and judgment to complete more complex credit decisions.
- Advanced proficiency in all underwriting processes and policies, and be able to communicate that knowledge verbally and in writing to other staff.
- Previous experience with Salesforce preferred
- Prior Relationship Management experience and supervising a team is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- French, preferred but not a must.
